礼品之路 ( Lǐpǐn zhī lù ) – The Gift of Every Moment

Simba.

I met him in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Young.

Vigorous.

Succesful.

Influential.

South African TV-star.

Presenter of a famous & popular TV show with exceptional ratings.

Our conversation was brief.

He made sure to let me know his life is a gift.

Our Origin his Giver.

He, receiver of much.

Grateful, for what has been entrusted to him.

Humble, he was.

In possession of all, to make him arrogant & puffed up, but so deeply aware of the Gift of Life, he could not let the small opportunity pass to remind me that we can only be grateful for what is bestowed upon us.

This weekend he passed from this world, into another.

A terrible car crash.

The time gifted to him, a little less, than what most of us imagine.

It has been said, ‘there is only one day on which we can do something, today, for yesterday is past & tomorrow is not guaranteed.’

This moment, now, truly all we have.

There is no time to remain angry.

At your wife, your children, your friends, your neighbours.

Change.

Adjust.

But don’t be consumed by the poison of anger which will only kill your soul.

There is no time to postpone forgiveness.

Forgive.

Quickly.

Even if there is no apology.

It doesn’t matter.

It’s okay.

Unforgiveness will only rob this moment of its joy.

There is no time to waste away from the people you love.

Your partner.

Your kids.

Your parents or siblings.

Why work 16 hours, if 18 is all you have?

Why live far away for months on end, if days is all at your disposal?

Why cycle and golf and run or occupy yourself with some diversion which takes you away?

Eat the best food you can.

Make it a feast.

Sleep with your partner, every night.

Play with your kids every day.

Tomorrow might not be there to eat & sleep & play.

And if it is there, if it is your gift, then be grateful for another day to eat & sleep & play.

Together.

But don’t imagine you’ll live to be a hundred.

Or even to be one day older.

Don’t wait to live.

For one day.

Then.

Then I will.

Travel, if that is what you desire.

Garden.

Take pictures.

Go horse riding.

Read that book, the one you said you will read when you have time.

You don’t know.

Now is the only time you know you will ever have.

It has been said so many times.

And yet, we keep on existing as if there will be lots of time to live later.

Live.

Now.

And if you awake another morning, let the first words on your lips be: thank you.

And if the ‘thank you’ is slow to come, because you dread the day, realize that you are not living.

The rhythm of this life is loss & gain & loss again.

There is always something lost, making space for something to be gained.

And when we stand at that last door, I know this too will be gain through the loss, but the loss will be a little less if we ravished every moment.

So I breathe, for us, that we will live.

Enjoy.

And be happy.

An ancient philosopher concluded, ‘there is nothing better than to eat and drink and be happy’.

I breathe, for us, that we will receive the gift of happiness, as we receive the gift of another day.

I breathe, for you and for me, that we will receive the gift of making the most of every moment, as we receive the gift of this moment.
