礼品之路 ( Lǐpǐn zhī lù ) – The Gift of Circumstance and Will

image

This tree.

Throughout Winter it waited patiently,  in our little yard, in our little village,  on the outskirts of Beijing.

It waited for Spring.

And when Spring came, with it came the perfect circumstances for our tree to blossom beautifully.

And as Summer comes, it will become warmer, it will rain some.

Circumstances will change.

It will be perfect.

As always.

For the tree to bring forth fruit.

It’s branches will be heavy with juicy orange food.

The tree has no control over it’s circumstances.

It did not decide where it would be planted, or even that it would be planted.

It does not command the weather or the Seasons.

It receives.

The soil in which it stands.

The sun on it’s leaves.

The relief of rain.

And if it does not, it withers.

For, without the right circumstances,  it cannot grow or come into full bloom or bear fruit or shed it’s fruit, hoping to procreate itself.

Without the right circumstances,  it cannot be entirely what it is meant to be.

And so it is with us, as well.

We cannot be, entirely what we are meant to be, in the absence of the circumstances which stimulates our growth and being.

We need thos things of which Maslow has spoken.

Safety.

Shelter.

Food.

We need more than that.

We need to be surrounded by kind people who love us.

We need to be embraced by people who draw us forward, people who call us out, into our selves.

For us, the Seasons are set as well, along the order of life.

We do not choose to be born or even that we are born.

We do not choose our gender or race or social class.

We do not choose our nationality.

We are, however, endowed with will.

And as time goes by and we grow from baby to toddler, to teenager to adult, we increasingly receive the capacity to choose.

Where we live.

And with whom we share life.

And sometimes, despite our will, we find ourselves in Winter.

Sometimes because of it.

Because of our capacity to choose and influence our circumstances.

But never, are we freed from the order of our Origin.

The order of life and death.

The order of loss and gain and loss again.

And always, as we choose for one direction, we choose against a myriad of other directions.

But, we can choose some.

We can influence our circumstances,  which will lead us into Spring.

And this is gift, alongside the gift of order, the gift through which we receive so much of that which brought us to where we are in this moment.

Not ever victims of this order.

But recipients.

From it, also receiving our desire for all we are and need to be as adults.

So I would encourage you, to choose, as much as you are allowed and able, to cooperate in the creation of your own Spring, to earnestly desire to be in the presence and proximity of people who feed your soul and being.

Off course,  as we apply our will, we Co create our order.

Choosing Zuko 20 years ago, placed me in relation to her and to our children and to others, and although, in the freedom of my will, I retain the capacity to destroy that little bit I created, it seems to be better to retain it, as some order is mwant to be lasting, while other order could be passing.

Your work.

Where you live.

How you live.

None of that is set in stone.

Who you come home to, even that is fluid, until you make a promise to share a life.

Sometimes, we choose against our promises, because we never realised them, I think.

Whatever the case may be,  we are not prisoners or automatons.

Inside the order Originally ordered, we receive will.

Which, like every other gift, could be burden as well.

Especially when we apply our will to our own detriment.

The tree in our yard is not planted in a forest.

It stands amidst concrete and stark buildings, breathing the Beijing Air.

Still it blossoms, as it’s roots sink deep into the little bit of soil it is allowed and it’s branches and leaves are nourished by the warmth of the sun.

May we not blind the sun, may we not dry the soil, with the gift of free will we receive.

May we cooperate with our Source and Sourceror,  enabled to choose the perfect circumstance at the perfect time, bringing us to full bloom, as we are enabled by Them from Whom we come, Whose breath is our Wind.
